The Main StreetTM Program

The Sumner Downtown Association is following the nationally accredited Main Street Four Point Approach. This methodology of the program provides a comprehensive approach to commercial district revitalization and has been proven successful in over 1500 cities across the country. Reinventing the wheel is no longer necessary for downtowns to once again be the heart and soul of the community.

The Four Point Approach divides the work of revitalization into four parts, equally balanced, with a committee for each segment. The Approach works to strengthen downtown's TOTAL IMAGE not just its physical image.

ORGANIZATION builds partnership among diverse groups - property owners, residents, merchants, service and professional businesses, public officials, the City, and other business associations, who must all work together to improve and maintain downtown.

PROMOTION markets a positive image of downtown through Retail (sponsored by retail businesses), Image and Special Events promotions and reestablishes it as an exciting place for shoppers, investors, residents and visitors.

DESIGN enhances all visual elements - public areas and improvements, rear entries, signage, murals and other artwork, seasonal enhancement with flower baskets and winter lighting not just building and storefront rehabilitation.

ECONOMIC RESTRUCTURING strengthens the existing business district while diversifying its economic base to achieve a downtown with a variety of uses and economic functions.
