OUR MISSION STATEMENT

The Sumner Downtown Association’s mission is: To promote the preservation and revitalization of our downtown as the heart of the Sumner Community.

The Sumner Downtown Association is a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization.  Originally incorporated in 1973 as the Sumner Promotion Association, its name was changed in 2006 to Sumner Downtown Association (SDA) as the Association began using the methodology of the National Trust’s National Main Street™ Center.  The Main Street program is a proven comprehensive revitalization process for downtown commercial districts.  It is designed to improve all aspects of downtown for tangible and intangible benefits.  Improving economic management, strengthening public participation through education and activities, and making downtown a nice place to spend some time are as critical to downtown’s success as recruiting new businesses, designing appropriate infill and rehabilitating old building.

There was a time when Main Street USA was everyone’s neighborhood, the heart and soul of the community.  More than a marketplace, Main Street was the center of civic and social activities, and its buildings reflected not only the town’s past but also its pride.  In a very real sense, Main Street symbolized the community’s identity and embodied its heritage.

Now, all over the country, Main Streets are being rediscovered, coming back into their own by combining historic preservation with downtown development.  Over 1500 downtowns have used the methodology of the Main Street program, since its inception in 1977.

Sumner Downtown Association is an organization whose purpose is to improve the vitality of the downtown and create a desirable place to work, shop, and live.  The Association is dedicated to the long-term preservation and revitalization of downtown Sumner.
